Why "8-Inch Chain" Isn't a Single Size
Bar length only tells you how long the bar is — not what chain runs on it. Three things decide that, and all three have to match:
- Drive links (DL): the number of teeth on the underside of the chain that sit in the bar groove. An 8" bar typically takes 33 or 34, set by the saw's sprocket and bar nose. This is the number most people miss.
- Pitch: nearly all 8" bars run 3/8" low profile, but it has to match your drive sprocket exactly.
- Gauge: the thickness of the drive links. Most 8" battery saws use .043" narrow kerf, which keeps drag low and preserves battery runtime. Fitting a thicker .050" chain will bind in the groove.
Common 8" Setups
- 3/8" LP pitch, .043" gauge — top-handle battery saws and pole-saw attachments (Ozito PXTCSS-1820, DeWalt DCMPS567 pole saw). Typically 33–34 drive links.
Because 8" saws are almost all battery powered, gauge matters more here than on petrol saws: a narrow-kerf chain removes less wood, so the motor draws less current and you get more cuts per charge.
How to Read Your Bar Stamp
On most bars, the numbers are stamped into the flat metal near the mounting slot, close to where the bar meets the saw body. You're looking for:
- The pitch — often shown as 3/8" LP, 3/8" Picco, etc.
- The gauge — often shown as .043", 1.1mm, etc.
- The drive-link count — sometimes stamped, otherwise count the drive links on your old chain.
