Why 10" Is the Trickiest Short Bar
Of all the short bar sizes, 10" spans the widest range of specifications β three pitches and two gauges are all in common use:
- Drive links (DL): anywhere from 38 to 46 depending on the saw. A pole pruner and a top-handle battery saw can both carry a 10" bar and take completely different chains.
- Pitch: most are 3/8" low profile, but some compact battery saws run 1/4" pitch. These are not interchangeable β the drive links won't mesh with the wrong sprocket.
- Gauge: both .043" and .050" are common at this size. Battery saws lean toward .043" narrow kerf for runtime; pole pruners often use .050".
Ordering a "10-inch chain" without those three numbers is close to a coin toss. That's why we confirm before we ship.
Common 10" Setups
- 3/8" LP pitch, .043" gauge β compact battery saws and pole-saw attachments (Makita DUC254Z and DUC256, Ryobi APR05 and R36CHS10, EGO PSA1000). Typically 40 drive links.
- 3/8" LP pitch, .050" gauge β petrol and battery pole pruners (Echo PPF and PPT series, Ozito PXCPPS-018, Makita EY401MP). Typically 39β40 drive links.
- 1/4" pitch β compact units such as the Makita DUC122Z and EGO PS1000 pole saw. Because 1/4" links are shorter, the count runs higher for the same bar length.
How to Read Your Bar Stamp
On most bars, the numbers are stamped into the flat metal near the mounting slot, close to where the bar meets the saw body. You're looking for:
- The pitch β often shown as 3/8" LP, 1/4", etc.
- The gauge β often shown as .043", .050", 1.1mm, 1.3mm.
- The drive-link count β sometimes stamped, otherwise count the drive links on your old chain.
Pole-saw bars in particular are often worn smooth from use. Counting drive links on the old chain is the most reliable method β see our how to measure a chainsaw chain guide.

What size chain fits a 10-inch bar?
Most 10" bars take between 38 and 46 drive links, usually in 3/8" low profile pitch with either a .043" or .050" gauge. Some compact saws use 1/4" pitch instead. Always confirm all three numbers.
How many drive links is a 10-inch chainsaw chain?
Commonly 39, 40 or higher depending on the saw, sprocket and pitch. Counting the drive links on your current chain is the most accurate check.
Are pole saw chains the same as chainsaw chains?
They use the same specifications β pitch, gauge and drive links β but pole pruners often run a .050" gauge where compact battery saws use .043". Match the numbers on your bar, not the tool type.
