Why 6" Chains Catch People Out
Short bars have the widest spread of pitches of any size we sell, and two traps in particular:
- The 0.300" pitch trap. Some popular mini saws — the ALDI Ferrex 20V CCS20VA among them — use a 0.300" pitch chain, not the 1/4" most people assume. They look almost identical, but fit the wrong one and it won't mesh with the sprocket.
- Drive-link count varies within the same model. Depending on the production batch, some units take 27 drive links and others 28. One link either way and the chain won't tension correctly.
This is exactly why we confirm before we ship rather than sending on bar length alone.
Common 6" Setups
- 1/4" or 0.300" pitch, .043" gauge — mini pruning saws and 20V compact units (ALDI Ferrex CCS20VA, Ozito pruning saws). Typically 27–28 drive links.
- .325" pitch, .043" gauge — the Makita DUC150Z and similar compact battery saws. Typically 32 drive links.
How to Read Your Bar Stamp
On most bars, the numbers are stamped into the flat metal near the mounting slot, close to where the bar meets the saw body. You're looking for:
- The pitch — often shown as 1/4", .325", etc.
- The gauge — often shown as .043", 1.1mm, etc.
- The drive-link count — sometimes stamped, otherwise count the drive links on your old chain.

What size chain fits a 6-inch bar?
Most 6" bars take a chain with 27 to 33 drive links, usually in 1/4", 0.300" or .325" pitch with a .043" gauge. The bar length alone doesn't identify the chain — confirm your pitch, gauge and drive-link count.
Is a 6-inch mini chainsaw chain the same as 1/4 inch?
Not always. Several popular mini saws use a 0.300" pitch that looks very similar to 1/4" but is not interchangeable. Check your bar stamp or send us a photo before ordering.
How many drive links is a 6-inch chainsaw chain?
Commonly 27, 28 or 32 depending on the saw. Some models vary between batches, so counting the links on your existing chain is the safest check.
