  1. The Fit: Will this chain physically fit my machine?
  2. The Function: Will this chain survive the Australian hardwood I need to cut?

Part 1: The Fit (Will it fit my saw?)

Before you worry about cutting speed or timber types, you must match the chain to your chainsaw’s specific geometry. A
chainsaw bar, sprocket, and chain are a closed system—if one variable is off,
the saw will not run.

The "Big Three" Measurements

Every chainsaw chain is defined by three
non-negotiable numbers. You cannot guess these.

1. Pitch (The distance between rivets)

This is the distance between the rivets. It
determines if the chain teeth will mesh with your drive sprocket.

  • Common sizes:1/4”,  3/8" LP (Low Profile), .325", 3/8" Standard, .404".
  • The Risk: Putting a .325" chain on a 3/8" sprocket will instantly destroy the chain and the sprocket and risk injuries.

To measure the pitch, take a measurement across any 3 consecutive rivets, (there should be one rivet between the starting and
ending rivets,) and divide by 2. Write this number down.

1/4” = 6.35mm,

0.0325” = 8.25mm,

3/8” LP and 3/8” STD = 9.53mm

2. Gauge (The Thickness)

This is the thickness of the drive link that
sits inside the bar groove.

  • Common sizes:
    .043", .050", .058", .063".
  • The Risk: If the gauge is too thin, the chain leans over and cuts crooked. If it’s too thick, it won't fit in the bar groove at all and may derail.

You may be able to measure this with a high-quality set of callipers, but more accurately, check bar or chain stamps and related
codes.

3. Drive Links (The Length)

This is the total count of drive links in the
loop. This—not bar length—is the only accurate measure of a chain's
size.

Decoding Your Existing Chain

Often, the answer is stamped right on the chain itself. Manufacturers like Stihl, Oregon, and Carlton stamp codes onto
the drive links to indicate pitch and gauge. However, these codes are not
universal.

Critical Compatibility Warning: 3/8" LP vs. 3/8" Standard

This is the most common and dangerous mistake we see in the shop. Both chains are technically "3/8 inch pitch," but
they are not compatible.

Don't Swap Them: Putting a heavy standard chain on a small saw will burn out your clutch. Putting a light LP chain on a pro saw can snap the chain under load.

Part 2: The Function (Will it cut my wood?)

Once you have the right size, you need to choose the right cutter. This is where Australian conditions change the
game. The advice you read on American or European forums often does not apply
to our dense, silica-rich hardwoods like Ironbark and Red Gum.

The Great Debate: Semi Chisel vs. Full Chisel

Chains are generally categorized by the shape of the cutting tooth.

  • Full Chisel (Square Corner): The speed demon. Fastest in clean, soft wood.
  • Semi Chisel (Rounded Corner): The workhorse. Durable in dirty, hard conditions.

In Australia, the "fastest" chain isn't always the best. If your Full Chisel chain dulls after two cuts in dry Box wood, it’s not fast—it’s a liability.

The Metallurgy of Durability: Why "Hardest" Isn't Best

There is a common misconception in the
chainsaw world that the best chain is always the one with the hardest possible
chrome plating. It seems logical: harder metal wears slower, right?

However, in the Australian bush, Hardness comes with a price: Brittle teeth that chip.

The "Extra Hard" Trap

Chains marketed as “Hard” or "Extra Hard/Carbide," grade rely on ultra-thick, extremely hard chrome plating or tungsten carbide teeth. While these perform well in clean softwood, they have two major flaws
when they hit Australian Hardwood:

  1. They Chip: When a super-hard cutter hits a knot, a rock, or silica-rich bark, it doesn't just dull—it often shatters. A chipped tooth is useless and requires significant grinding to fix, or in the case of carbide, cannot be fixed at all.
  2. They Fight the File: Try hand-filing an ultra-hard chain in the paddock. The file "skates" off the tooth like it's on glass. You can't get the file to bite, meaning you can't restore the edge without a powered bench grinder. This is because the metal of the chain is harder than the file. It is unfileable.

The Alpine "Medium-Hard" Balance

We use a specific Medium-Hard alloy that offers the practical balance required for professional work and reasonable
maintenance:

  • Toughness: The steel is durable enough to hold an edge in Ironbark and Red Gum without "rolling over" like a cheap soft chain.
  • Serviceability:
    Crucially, the chrome is engineered to accept a file. This means when your chain eventually dulls (and all chains do), you can restore a razor-sharp edge in 5 minutes with a standard round file.

The Verdict: A chain you can easily keep sharp will always out-cut a "hard" chain that
stays dull because you can't file it, or simply don’t because it takes too
long.

 

Dealing with "Dirty" Wood

Farm work, fence clearing, and firewood
collection are brutal on chains. You are often cutting close to the ground, dealing with mud-caked bark, or sawing through old, dry logs that are as hard
as concrete.

Standard chains often fail here because the silica (sand) in the bark destroys the fine point of the cutter.

Part 3:
Specialty Applications

For advanced users running milling setups or long bars (24" and up), standard chains may encounter efficiency issues.

Milling Slabs (Ripping)

Turning a log into lumber requires a different
cutting action. You are cutting with the grain (ripping) rather than across
it (cross-cutting). Standard chains can grab and leave a rough finish.

Big Bars & Chip Clearance (Skip Tooth)

If you are running a bar over 24 inches in
Australian hardwood, your saw might bog down. This isn't a lack of power; it's
a lack of chip clearance. "Skip Tooth" chains remove every second cutter to allow more room for chips to clear.
