Why "28-Inch Chain" Isn't a Single Size

At 28 inches you're on a large-displacement felling saw, running full 3/8" pitch. But two things vary at this length — and one of them is the link count itself. Three things decide your chain, and all three have to match:

• Drive links (DL): here's the catch at 28" — the count is brand-dependent. Stihl 28" bars are commonly 91 drive links, while Husqvarna 28" bars are commonly 93. Same bar length, different chain. Always confirm your exact count from the bar stamp or old chain.
• Pitch: full 3/8" — the professional standard at this length. It has to match your saw's drive sprocket.
• Gauge: the thickness of the drive links, in .050", .058" or .063". It has to match your bar groove. In Australia, many Stihl saws run .063" where other markets use .050".

How to Read Your Bar Stamp

On most bars, the numbers are stamped into the flat metal near the mounting slot, close to where the bar meets the saw body. You're looking for:

1. The pitch — on a 28" bar, full 3/8".
2. The gauge — often shown as .050", .058", .063", or in mm (1.3mm, 1.5mm, 1.6mm).
3. The drive-link count — typically 91 (Stihl) or 93 (Husqvarna); sometimes stamped, otherwise count the drive links on your old chain.
