Is a 25" Bar the Same as a 24"?

Effectively, yes — and this trips a lot of people up. "25 inch" is largely a Stihl convention; where Stihl calls a bar 25", most other brands would call the same class of bar 24". Both commonly run a full 3/8" pitch chain at 84 drive links. So if your saw is a Stihl with a 25" bar, you're looking for an 84 DL, 3/8" chain in the correct gauge. That said, always confirm your actual drive-link count and gauge from the bar stamp rather than assuming — bar nose and sprocket differences can shift the count.

Why the Chain Still Isn't Automatic

Even at a fixed length and pitch, one thing still varies and has to match — the gauge. Three things decide your chain:

• Drive links (DL): the teeth on the underside of the chain that sit in the bar groove. A 25" bar typically takes 84 drive links. Confirm against your bar stamp or old chain.
• Pitch: at 25", full 3/8" — the professional standard. It has to match your saw's drive sprocket.
• Gauge: the thickness of the drive links. On these Stihl-class saws it's usually .063" in Australia, though .050" also appears. It has to match your bar groove exactly — this is the one to confirm.

Get all three right and the chain runs true. Get the gauge wrong and it either won't seat or it runs loose. That's why we match on the full specification instead of bar length.

How to Read Your Bar Stamp

On most bars, the numbers are stamped into the flat metal near the mounting slot, close to where the bar meets the saw body. You're looking for:

1. The pitch — on a 25" bar, almost always 3/8".
2. The gauge — often shown as .050", .063", or in mm (1.3mm, 1.6mm). This is the critical one at this length.
3. The drive-link count — typically 84; sometimes stamped, otherwise count the drive links on your old chain.
