Why "22-Inch Chain" Isn't a Single Size

By 22 inches you're on a serious professional saw, and the pitch is almost always full 3/8" — so the drive-link count is usually 76. But that's not the whole story. Three things decide your chain, and all three have to match:

• Drive links (DL): the number of teeth on the underside of the chain that sit in the bar groove. A 22" bar typically takes 76 drive links. Confirm it against your bar stamp or old chain to be sure.
• Pitch: the distance between drive links. At 22" this is almost always full 3/8" — the professional standard. It has to match your saw's drive sprocket exactly.
• Gauge: this is the one to watch at 22". The thickness of the drive links comes in .050", .058" and .063", and it has to match the width of your bar groove exactly. In Australia in particular, many Stihl saws run a .063" gauge where other markets use .050" — so a chain that looks right on paper can still be the wrong thickness. Always check.

Get all three right and the chain runs true. Get the gauge wrong and it either won't seat in the groove, or it'll run loose and wear out fast. That's exactly why we match on the full specification instead of bar length.

How to Read Your Bar Stamp

On most bars, the numbers are stamped into the flat metal near the mounting slot, close to where the bar meets the saw body. You're looking for:

1. The pitch — on a 22" bar, almost always 3/8".
2. The gauge — often shown as .050", .058", .063", or in mm (1.3mm, 1.5mm, 1.6mm). This is the critical one at this length.
3. The drive-link count — typically 76; sometimes stamped, otherwise count the drive links on your old chain.
