What Makes Permit and Salvage Timber Different From a Fresh-Felled Log

Most chain advice — and most chain design — assumes you're cutting a clean, freshly felled log. Firewood collected under permit rarely looks like that.

Ground Contact Means Grit in the Grain

Under both NSW and Victorian rules, firewood permits only allow you to collect timber that's already down — standing trees are off-limits. That timber has usually been on the forest floor for months, sometimes years. Every day it sits there, it picks up sand, grit and soil, especially around the underside and in bark crevices. None of that is visible before you make the cut, and every bit of it acts like sandpaper on your cutting edge the moment the chain contacts it.

Mixed Seasoning, Mixed Density

Permit timber is also rarely uniform. You'll often be cutting a mix of partially seasoned rounds, waterlogged sections, and fully dry hardwood in the same load — sometimes in the same log. This is the main reason a chain that "should" still be sharp after a few logs suddenly isn't cutting straight or pulling itself into the wood.

Why a "Sharp Enough" Chain Still Cuts Slow

A chain can pass the fingernail test and still under-perform in permit timber if the depth gauges (rakers) haven't been checked. Raker height controls how aggressively each tooth bites — and in dense, contaminated hardwood, a raker setting that's fine for clean green timber will leave you working much harder for a slower cut, well before the teeth themselves are actually blunt.

Setting Up Your Chain Before You Head Into the Forest

For dry ironbark, red gum, spotted gum and similar dense eucalypts, a slightly more conservative raker setting than you'd run in green timber gives you better control and less chain grab, without sacrificing meaningful cutting speed. Check raker height every second or third sharpen, not just when the chain feels obviously slow.

Filing Angle and Frequency

Grit-damaged edges need more frequent, lighter touch-ups than fibre-dulled ones — a couple of light passes with a round file every log or two will outperform waiting until the chain feels blunt and then trying to restore it in one heavy session. If you're hitting visible soil or embedded grit, stop and check the edge before continuing; pushing a contaminated edge through more wood compounds the damage.

What to Carry With You

A round file in the correct diameter for your chain's pitch, a flat file or raker gauge, and a stiff brush to clear grit from the bar groove are worth the extra weight in your kit for a full day of permit cutting.

Know Your Permit Conditions Before You Cut
