Why Your Kings Chain Dulls Faster Than You'd Expect

A 40V battery saw is a genuinely useful tool for property maintenance, storm cleanup and firewood topping-up. But it ships with a chain built to a price and specified for general use — not for the timber most Australians actually cut.

Two things work against it in dry hardwood:

The narrow-kerf gauge is doing you a favour. That .043" chain is thinner than the .050" on most petrol saws, which is deliberate — it removes less wood per pass, so the motor draws less current and you get more cuts per charge. Keep that gauge. A thicker chain won't fit the bar groove and would flatten your battery faster anyway.

The cutter profile is where you gain. Factory chains on battery saws are usually low-kickback safety chains with a square-cornered full chisel geometry. In clean, green timber that's fine. In seasoned Red Gum or gritty Box, that square corner chips within a few cuts and you're left pushing a dull chain through hardwood with a 40V motor that has nothing spare.

Keep a File With It

This matters more on a battery saw than a petrol one, and it's worth understanding why.

A dull chain doesn't just cut slowly — it grinds. Grinding means friction, friction means heat and current draw, and on a battery saw that translates directly into shorter runtime. A blunt chain will halve your cuts per charge before it halves your cutting speed.

A 4.0mm round file, two or three strokes per tooth when the saw comes off the charger, and you keep both the edge and the battery life. Chain and file are a pair — with a quick file, you're cutting clean and easy, keeping the saw running more efficiently. What Else Takes the Same Chain?
